American Orchid Society - Director of Education Note:
Pansy-Orchids, as Miltoniopsis are commonly called in the horticultural world, are hybrids developed from a genus of 5 or
6 species of cool-growing orchids distributed from Costa Rica to Peru. The parent species are epiphytes from extremely
wet cloud forests at elevations from 1500 to 7000 feet. The requirement for cool, moist conditions makes these plants
especially vulnerable to habitat loss as the world’s rain forests are cut down and global warming leads to the drying out of
areas historically moist. Flowering typically occurs in the Spring and Summer and these hybrids are excellent subjects in
areas that are cool year-round.
