American Orchid Society - Director of Education Note:
Widely distributed throughout the Caribbean Islands and Mexico southward to Colombia, Venezuela, and Guyana in low-
lying rainforests, Brassavola cucullata is the type species for the genus and also has the distinction of being among the
first formally named of all epiphytic orchids, receiving its binomial from none other than Linnaeus in his second edition of
Species Plantarum (1763). The long, tapered lip is unique in the genus and can reach a length of up to 4” or more.
Flowering occurs in the summer and the powerfully night-fragrant flowers are pollinated by moths attracted to their
fragrance.
